Deal of the Week: Death Valley

Talk about extreme. The Furnace Creek Inn & Ranch Resort in Death Valley National Park, which has the lowest elevation in the U.S. and often its hottest temperatures, is reducing already low summer rates through August. The main reason is that the resort has unsold rooms because fewer foreigners are visiting this summer, a spokeswoman said. Displaying a sense of humor about the situation, the Furnace Creek Inn, rated Four Diamonds by AAA, is offering rooms starting at $134--matching what it says is the highest temperature ever recorded in the valley. (The average July-August high is 115 degrees.) Rooms at the inn usually start at $175 from May to October and $260 from October to May. The Furnace Creek Ranch, rated Two Diamonds by AAA, has rooms starting at $87--the average low temperature in July and August. Rooms at the ranch usually start at $133 year-round.
