Ex-President Refuses to Testify at Milosevic Trial
Ex-Yugoslav President Zoran Lilic, who was forcibly brought to the U.N. war crimes tribunal in The Hague as a witness, refused to testify against Slobodan Milosevic without guarantees that he cannot be prosecuted for revealing state secrets.
Lilic, who served as president of the Yugoslav federation from 1993 until Milosevic took over in 1997, was detained last week in Belgrade and flown to the Netherlands.
Yugoslav officials hastily agreed to release Milosevic’s close associates from the obligations to preserve state secrets before the tribunal.
But Lilic demanded the specific approval of Yugoslav President Vojislav Kostunica and the Supreme Defense Council.
