New Luxury Hotels Have Social Implications

Share

Re “Hotel Wave Hits Coastal Southland,” June 15:

It makes me weary to think that few people are questioning the possible social implications of these large luxury hotels on our communities. Increasing numbers of nonwhite immigrant workers will be recruited for service and maintenance jobs at these hotels. The question is if we are willing to “deal” with the greater presence of those who must work below the minimum wage in order to survive.

The race to improve and expand luxury hotels is little more than an desire to breathe life into the scarcely scenic Southland beaches. This situation serves to underscore the influence and power of an elite few and further reinforces the gap between the rich and poor.
