Thoroughbreds in the Spotlight

Share

A night after the stakes-filled California Champions quarterhorse program, thoroughbreds will be featured in three of the nine races.

In the first, older fillies and mares racing for a $2,500 tag will run 4 1/2 furlongs, the only distance thoroughbreds run at Los Alamitos. Vagabondia, who broke her maiden two back for trainer Jesus Nunez, looks like the one to catch.

Two races later, Riggin Lady, who has won seven of 32, will try to go wire to wire against five other $2,500 fillies and mares. Owned and trained by Adan Farias, the 5-year-old has the advantage of the rail and will be handled by Victor Diaz. In the sixth, 10 older males running for the $2,500 tag will get together and Proyen, who won at 31-1 June 9, will try to win another on the front end as he leaves from the inside post. Modesto Linares will ride for trainer Juan Cervantes.
