Blood Poisoning Death Prompts Alert by USC
Following the death Saturday of a Dana Point freshman from blood poisoning, USC officials are urging anyone who has had close personal contact with the student over the last 10 days to immediately seek treatment with antibiotics.
USC officials said tests have been inconclusive on whether Jered John Connon, 18, who died at Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo, was infected with bacterial meningitis.
As a precaution, however, they are urging students who had close contact with Connon to go to the student health service for treatment.
Officials said it rarely is transmitted by casual contact.
