A man walking in his Canoga Park neighborhood Monday was shot and killed by an unknown gunman.

Witnesses told police they saw the man walking north on Loma Verde Avenue at 5:25 p.m., when a dark-colored vehicle, possibly a sport utility vehicle, pulled into the intersection at Valerio Street and stopped.

The driver got out, ran up to the man and opened fire, shooting him several times in the torso. The name of the 25-year-old man was not released.

Police don’t know if the victim and the gunman knew each other.

“At this point, we just don’t know what the motive is, but it looked like [the gunman] was definitely targeting this guy,” Los Angeles Police Det. Rick Swanston said.

A resident who asked not to be identified said she was in her backyard a few houses away and heard the gunshots. “I thought it was much farther away,” she said. “For a shooting to be so close is scary.”
