Michael Sgroi kicked three field goals, and Chris Lewis threw to Alex Smith for the game’s only touchdown as Stanford defeated Arizona, 16-6, Saturday.

The Cardinal (2-4 overall, 1-2 in the Pacific 10 Conference) took the lead for good in the first quarter when Sgroi kicked a 45-yard field goal.

After Sgroi’s field goal, Arizona began moving up the field, until Stanley Wilson intercepted one of Johnson’s passes and ran 35 yards to the Wildcat 17-yard line.

On the second play of possession at the 12, Lewis passed to Smith, who pulled the ball down from over his head and fell backward into the end zone for a 9-0 lead.

Arizona’s Bobby Wade was the single biggest threat to Stanford, catching eight passes for 121 yards.

The Wildcats’ only scores came on two field goals by Bobby Gill, from 25 and 23 yards.
