Rebels Set Fire to Government Buildings
Maoist rebels launched a major overnight attack on the remote Nepalese town of Sandhikharka and set fire to several government offices, the junior home minister said. There was no immediate word on casualties -- communications were severed -- but a police official said the toll could be high because about 200 police and soldiers were posted in the town.
The rebels, fighting to set up a one-party communist republic, have stepped up attacks on government installations in recent weeks.
The latest came a day after an assault on a police post by more than 1,000 rebels in which 49 police officers were killed.
