Storm Watch Issued as Gustav Heads for Coast
Subtropical Storm Gustav formed in the Atlantic off North Carolina, with its outer bands of wind and rain expected to reach the coast today, forecasters said.
A tropical storm watch was ordered from Cape Fear, N.C., to the Virginia border. Forecasters at the National Hurricane Center in Miami expected the storm to strengthen by midweek.
Computer forecasts had Gustav’s center nearing the coastline by Tuesday morning. It is the seventh named storm of the 2002 Atlantic hurricane season, which began June 1 and ends Nov. 30.
