One of the nation’s oldest high school track and field records could fall over the next two days at Azusa Pacific, where Donovan Kilmartin of Eagle, Idaho, will compete in the decathlon competition of the Mt. San Antonio College Relays.

Kilmartin, who has committed to Texas, set a national record of 7,440 points while competing with the junior-level implements last year. But the national record he’s shooting for this time is the 7,359-point total set in 1972 by Craig Brigham of South Eugene, Ore., while competing with the heavier international-level implements.

The 6-foot-2, 166-pound Kilmartin could score more than 900 points in the high jump, pole vault and long jump -- events in which he has bests of 7-1 1/2, 17-3 1/2 and 24-7 3/4, respectively.

“I have to be consistent across the board,” Kilmartin said at a media luncheon Monday when asked if there was a key to breaking Brigham’s record. “I don’t have to put up any great marks, but I can’t have any bad marks either.”
