Freight Train Derails, Spills Liquid Fertilizer

A freight train derailed Monday in southwestern Tulare County, destroying nearly a quarter-mile of track and spilling hundreds of gallons of fertilizer.
Two of the 16 cars that derailed about 9:20 a.m. were carrying liquid fertilizer, but firefighters deemed it not to be hazardous. Other cars that overturned carried tomato paste.
The derailment occurred on the Burlington Northern Santa Fe tracks along Highway 43 about 50 miles north of Bakersfield. No injuries were reported.
