Interrupting AIDS Drugs Called Dangerous

A new study has found that temporarily stopping AIDS treatment -- an approach called structured treatment interruptions -- is ineffective and even dangerous as a strategy for controlling drug-resistant HIV. Researchers at UC San Francisco studied 270 volunteers, half of whom went four months without treatment and half of whom continued treatment.
The researchers reported in this week’s New England Journal of Medicine that those who skipped treatment were more likely to die or suffer severe complications of HIV infection.
