Rebels Threaten to Overrun Capital

Rebels pushed within six miles of Monrovia, Liberia’s capital, and threatened to overrun it unless President Charles Taylor ends attacks. The government accused the insurgents of attacking its positions.

Defense Minister Daniel Chea said the rebel group Liberians United for Reconciliation and Democracy overran a key military base.

Frightened residents sheltering at a teeming U.S. diplomatic compound clamored for international peacekeepers.
