Ex-Dictator Dealt Election Setback
The Guatemalan Supreme Court has temporarily suspended former dictator Efrain Rios Montt’s registration as a presidential candidate. The ruling came after opposition parties appealed a decision by the Constitutional Court, the country’s highest court, that had cleared the way for him to run.
Judge Gerardo Hurtado said the court upheld the appeal because of a constitutional ban that prohibits coup leaders from seeking the presidency. The suspension delays Rios Montt’s candidacy between 30 and 45 days. He has until Sept. 9 to register.
