Times’ War Coverage
For many months, I have closely followed The Times’ coverage of the U.S. invasion and occupation of Iraq. John Daniszewski’s stories from Baghdad and Carolyn Cole’s photographs from all over Iraq stand out as exceptional.
Daniszewski obviously listens intently to the ordinary people of Iraq and tries to present their situation fairly and objectively. His physical descriptions are vivid and compelling. This is grass-roots reporting at its best.
Cole’s photos are consistently stunning. The interplay of shadow and light and the expressions on people’s faces can be breathtaking. Her pictures are works of art.
