Man Likely Drowns Off Huntington
For the third time in less than a week, a swimmer has apparently drowned off the Orange County coast.
An 18-year-old Riverside man was presumed drowned off Huntington State Beach late Monday, authorities said.
The man, whose name was being withheld until his relatives were notified, was at a beach cookout between Magnolia Avenue and Brookhurst Street when he and a friend entered the water about 8 p.m., according to Joe Milligan, park superintendent.
A short time later, Milligan said, the friend returned to shore seeking help for the man, who he said was in trouble.
“A park visitor saw him slip under the water,” Mulligan said. “We have witnesses saying that he couldn’t swim. There’s a sand bar offshore and ... the nonswimmer could have run into problems.”
Lifeguards continued searching for the man’s body Monday night.
On July 15, a 23-year-old bodysurfer drowned off Huntington city beach after an evening cookout with friends. The next day another bodysurfer, age 55, drowned off Laguna Beach at about 7 p.m.
