Car-Theft Suspect Dies Eluding Deputy
A suspected car thief died Monday after he used a car to drag a police officer a short distance, and then drove into a power pole at a high rate of speed, authorities said.
A San Bernardino County sheriff’s deputy made a traffic stop shortly before 3 p.m. at Foothill Boulevard and Vineyard Avenue in Rancho Cucamonga, said Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman Robin Haynal.
When the deputy realized the car was stolen, the driver took off, dragging the officer a couple of feet and prompting him to fire his gun. The suspect then drove into a power pole. The officer was not seriously injured and the investigation is ongoing, Haynal said. The suspect’s identity was not released by police.
