The county water agency unanimously approved a 75-year deal on Thursday to buy water from Imperial Valley.

The deal had been approved Tuesday by the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California and Wednesday by the Coachella Valley Water District.

For decades, San Diego officials have sought to decrease the region’s dependence on water purchases from the MWD.

Bernie Rhinerson, chairman of the San Diego County Water Authority’s governing board, said the deal would “vastly improve” the county’s water supply “for many generations to come.”

The Imperial Irrigation District is set to consider the deal on Oct. 7.
