Not even a breakout performance by Alex Rodriguez could stop the Boston Red Sox.

Mark Bellhorn drove in Manny Ramirez in the 12th inning with a sacrifice fly, and the Red Sox defeated the New York Yankees, 3-2, Saturday at Yankee Stadium, their fifth win in six games against their arch-rivals.

Scott Williamson, Alan Embree, Keith Foulke (1-0) and Mike Timlin held the Yankees without a run for six innings, increasing the bullpen’s scoreless streak to 22 2/3 innings.

Rodriguez brought New York to within 2-1 with his third homer as a Yankee and helped tie the score by sparking a seventh-inning rally with a single. He scored on Gary Sheffield’s single.

Rodriguez also possibly saved two runs in the third with a diving stop on Kevin Millar’s sharp grounder deep behind third base. He made the throw from foul territory to get Millar.

After failing to score with the bases loaded against Mariano Rivera in the 11th, the Red Sox got to Paul Quantrill (2-1) in the 12th. Ramirez led off with a double, took third on a groundout and scored on Bellhorn’s fly to center.

Detroit 5, Cleveland 2 -- Rondell White hit a three-run homer off Chad Durbin in the bottom of the ninth inning. Fernando Vina led off with a single off Scott Stewart (0-1). With one out, Durbin came in and threw away a pickoff attempt that advanced Vina to third. Ivan Rodriguez was intentionally walked, and White homered to left-center. Detroit, which lost a league-record 119 games last season, improved to 11-7. The Tigers didn’t get their 11th win last season until May 23, when they were 11-35.

Tampa Bay 4, Chicago 1 -- A day after his fielding error in the 10th inning led to a 3-2 loss, Julio Lugo drove in two runs to help Doug Waechter win at Chicago. Waechter (1-0) gave up four hits and one run in six innings.

Kansas City 10, Minnesota 1 -- Carlos Beltran had a birthday party at the Twins’ expense at Kansas City, Mo. He homered and tripled on his 27th birthday to help the Royals win for the second time in 10 games.

Toronto 5, Baltimore 4 -- Frank Catalanotto hit a tiebreaking single in the 12th inning at Baltimore. Chris Woodward led off the inning with a double to left against Mike DeJean (0-1), and Catalanotto followed with a single to left.
