Returning Luster to 1984 Olympic Glory

Artist Dave Gordon is updating a mural under the Santa Monica Boulevard overpass on the Hollywood Freeway, painted to celebrate the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. He is re-creating the image of four runners as they appeared in 1984 and mirroring them with portraits of how they might look 20 years later. “They’ve been running for 20 years,” he said. “I’m painting them so they don’t have to run anymore.” It’s part of a 13-mural, $1.7-million restoration project funded by the state. Four of the damaged murals have been restored so far.
