Kenya’s warriors of the dance
Wildlife photography was the focus of her African tour, but Karen Sheiniuk says one of her favorite images is this picture of Masai villagers in Kenya performing a warrior dance. “Their legs are painted with warrior stripes,” Sheiniuk says. “Their headdresses were as individual as their body paint.” Before the August trip, the Van Nuys paralegal had taken photography lessons for a year. That knowledge, along with a long lens and fast film, helped Sheiniuk get this shot of a dancer at the apex of his jump.
