Student role models face deportation
Re “Immigration Test Leaves Star Students in Free-Fall,” July 19
Do well in school, excel, stand out, be rewarded and become a productive member of society. When I read about the Wilson Four in Phoenix, the message received was ignore your studies, slack off, stay under the wire, receive no rewards, then with little education you labor for others, but who cares, at least you weren’t deported.
Making examples of these young scholars is a huge mistake for all students. Rarely do students choose science subjects, they rarely excel in science and even rarer do they enter national science competitions.
As a high school mathematics teacher, I am outraged at the lack of support for education, and as a Republican, outraged at the lack of support for productivity.
I urge immigration officials to allow the Wilson Four to stay in the U.S. as a sign that other students like them have opportunities to excel and become productive members of society.
