Pitcairn Men’s Appeal of Rape Sentences Rejected
Pitcairn Island’s Supreme Court rejected the appeals of six men from the tiny and remote Pacific island against their convictions and sentences for a string of sex attacks dating back 40 years.
The court, sitting in the New Zealand city of Auckland, rejected defense arguments that there had been an abuse of process at the men’s trials last year on Pitcairn, which is home to descendants of the 18th century mutineers from the Bounty.
Former Pitcairn mayor Steve Christian and five others were convicted on charges including rape and indecent assault of mostly underage girls.
