Smoking will be prohibited in San Diego County parks, campgrounds and open spaces under an ordinance passed by county supervisors that takes effect in January.

The county joins a growing number of jurisdictions that have jumped on the no-smoking bandwagon. Among them are the city of San Diego and at least 10 other cities in the region.

Wednesday’s vote by the Board of Supervisors was 4 to 1.

Chairman Bill Horn, the lone dissenter, has said he views the ban as an unenforceable intrusion on personal liberties.

More than 40,000 acres of parkland and open space, with more than 300 miles of trails, will be affected by the ban.
