As much as he wanted to treat it like any other victory, Jerry Sloan had to suffer through a little adulation after the Utah Jazz gave him his 1,000th win as an NBA coach.

Jazz fans saluted Sloan with a chant of “Jer-ry! Jer-ry!” for the last two minutes, then a standing ovation at the end of Utah’s 101-79 victory over the Dallas Mavericks on Monday at Salt Lake City.

Sloan is the fifth coach to win 1,000 games. It was much more important to him that the Jazz (16-5) kept the NBA’s best record and beat the defending Western Conference champion Mavericks.

“I’m glad it’s behind us and now we can play basketball,” said Sloan, 1,000-663 as a coach.

Carlos Boozer led Utah with 31 points and 11 rebounds. Dirk Nowitzki had 26 points for Dallas, which has lost three of five since its 12-game winning streak.

Phoenix 103, Orlando 89 -- Amare Stoudemire scored a season-high 30 points, Steve Nash had 15 assists and the Suns won their 11th in a row by holding the host Magic to 27.8% shooting and forcing seven turnovers in the third period while outscoring Orlando, 30-14, to break open a close game.

Former UCLA standout Trevor Ariza had a season-high 19 points for Orlando.

New Jersey 105, Memphis 92 -- Vince Carter set a Nets single-game record with nine three-point baskets and finished with 37 points at East Rutherford, N.J.

Carter made nine of 20 three-point attempts for the Nets, who also tied a franchise record with 15 in 30 attempts to end a three-game losing streak.

Chucky Atkins had 26 points for Memphis.

Chicago 106, Indiana 91 -- Ben Gordon scored 23 points, and the host Bulls shot 83% (15 for 18) in the first quarter to beat the short-handed Pacers.

Danny Granger and Jamaal Tinsley scored 21 points for Indiana, playing without Al Harrington and Marquis Daniels because of stomach ailments. Jermaine O’Neal also was sick but wouldn’t have played anyway because of a hamstring injury.

Stephen Jackson was suspended for the game because of an argument with Coach Rick Carlisle during Saturday’s loss to Cleveland.

Miami 99, Toronto 77 -- Dwyane Wade tied his season high with 37 points, and the Heat used an 18-2 second-quarter run to roll at Miami.

Wade had individual runs of 11 and 10 points for the Heat. Anthony Parker scored 18 points for Toronto, which played its second straight game without leading scorer Chris Bosh (knee injury).

Boston 97, New York 90 -- Paul Pierce scored 30 points to help the Celtics hold on at New York after blowing most of a 30-point lead.

Boston led, 68-38, early in the third quarter before the Knicks got within three with 1:28 to play.

Memphis Grizzlies forward Pau Gasol, who hasn’t played this season after breaking his left foot at the World Championships last summer, could return this weekend, the team said. The Grizzlies, however, lost backup forward Lawrence Roberts for at least a month because of a knee injury.
