Mighty Duck center Todd Marchant was on the ice at the end of Saturday’s practice at Anaheim Ice, but he only took part in non-contact drills. He continues to take antibiotics for an infected left elbow that flared up early last week.

“I got home [to Ohio] on Monday morning,” Marchant said. “By Tuesday afternoon, it was inflamed. Over the next few days, it just progressively got worse.”

Marchant said the elbow is responding well to treatment and that he hopes to play Wednesday against Detroit.

Captain Scott Niedermayer continues to progress in his recovery from arthroscopic surgery on his right knee, skating lightly for 25 minutes.

The Ducks won’t practice today but the defenseman is expected to skate on his own at the Arrowhead Pond.

“The doctor doesn’t want me to get too aggressive right away,” Niedermayer said. “I’ve felt good up to now but he doesn’t want me to be going for it and then having a big setback and have it swell back up.”

As expected, the Ducks recalled rookie left wing Dustin Penner from their minor-league affiliate in Portland, Maine.

Penner, a 23-year-old forward, was sent down to Portland during the NHL Olympic break to allow him to play in some games for the Pirates and stay sharp. He had four goals and four assists in six games and had at least a point in each of the last five.
