Singing Ella’s praises

Singer Ella Fitzgerald reigned as the jazz queen of the Great American Songbook for more than 50 years. Wednesday would have been her 90th birthday, and there are two singing tributes to “The First Lady of Song” planned this weekend.

Sunday at the Galen Center, Natalie Cole, k.d. lang, Nancy Wilson, Cyndi Lauper, Quincy Jones, Take 6, Wynonna Judd, Ruben Studdard, Patti Austin, Lizz Wright, Monica Mancini, Dave Koz, George Duke, James Moody, the USC Thornton Symphony and Jazz Orchestra and a “special surprise guest” will perform in “Happy Birthday, Ella.”

Ella Fitzgerald: A Hot Ticket item in Thursday’s Calendar Weekend said that k.d. lang would be performing Sunday at an Ella Fitzgerald tribute concert at USC Galen Center. Lang will not perform. Sunday’s concert will be recorded and broadcast on June 6 as “We Love Ella! A Tribute to the First Lady of Song” on PBS.

The West Coast Jazz Singers will celebrate Fitzgerald and her music at the Musicians Union in Hollywood on Friday and Saturday. Grammy-nominee Tierney Sutton and her band will perform along with Ernie Andrews, Barbara Morrison, Billy Valentine, Mark Winkler, Yevette Stewart, the Frank Capp Juggernaut Big Band, Cheryl Barnes, Michael Konik, Charmaine Clamor, John Altman, Chester Whitmore and others.
