Mets get Conine from Reds

The New York Mets got Jeff Conine from the Cincinnati Reds for two minor leaguers Monday, adding a 41-year-old player who has two World Series rings and knows how to contribute off the bench.

Conine can play first base or outfield and is a solid pinch-hitter; he led the Reds with nine hits in that role. Conine is batting .265 overall with six home runs and 32 runs batted in.

“We’ve had our eyes on him for a while,” said General Manager Omar Minaya, who made the move one day after the Mets put infielder Damion Easley on the 15-day disabled list because of a sprained left ankle.

The Reds acquired 20-year-old shortstop Jose Castro and 22-year-old outfielder Sean Henry, who were playing for Class-A Port St. Lucie.

The Detroit Tigers will recall Joel Zumaya from his rehabilitation assignment to be active for tonight’s game against the Cleveland Indians.

Detroit optioned right-hander Aquilino Lopez to triple-A Toledo, clearing room for Zumaya.

Zumaya, whose fastball often tops 100 mph, had surgery three months ago to repair a ruptured tendon in his right middle finger. He was put on the disabled list May 3 with a 1-1 record, 3.63 earned-run average and 17 strikeouts in 13 appearances.

Reliever Mike Myers and the Chicago White Sox reached agreement on a contract, two weeks after the New York Yankees cut him. Myers, a 38-year-old left-hander, will get the prorated minimum salary for the rest of this season. The White Sox hold a $1.1-million option for next year with no buyout. . . . The Chicago Cubs optioned infielder Ronny Cedeno to triple-A Iowa and designated catcher Koyie Hill for assignment. . . . The Baltimore Orioles activated utilityman Freddie Bynum from the 15-day disabled list and optioned infielder Brandon Fahey to triple-A Norfolk. . . . The Oakland A’s put outfielder Travis Buck on the 15-day disabled list because of a strained left hamstring and recalled infielder J.J. Furmaniak from triple-A Sacramento.
