Dolphins pick Green to start

Trent Green was selected the Miami Dolphins’ starting quarterback Monday, ending some curious speculation over who would win the job.

Green beat out Cleo Lemon, said Dolphins Coach Cam Cameron -- who insisted throughout training camp that a real competition was taking place. The Dolphins acquired Green from Kansas City in June for a draft pick.

Atlanta Falcons quarterback D.J. Shockley, battling for the No. 2 spot behind Joey Harrington, confirmed that he will likely undergo season-ending surgery next week for a torn anterior cruciate ligament suffered in Friday’s exhibition at Buffalo.

The Detroit Lions activated defensive tackle Shaun Rogers from the physically unable-to-perform list, making him eligible to practice for the first time since being put on injured reserve with four games left last season because Coach Rod Marinelli ruled he wasn’t healthy.

Carolina Panthers middle linebacker Dan Morgan will play in a game Friday for the first time since suffering at least the fifth concussion of his career in the 2006 season opener.

Arizona Cardinals starting offensive tackle Oliver Ross will have surgery to repair a torn triceps tendon Thursday that could end his season.

The Oakland Raiders acquired defensive tackle Gerard Warren from the Denver Broncos for a conditional fifth-round pick in the first deal between the AFC West rivals since 1993.

The Chicago Bears overcame quarterback Rex Grossman, scoring 17 straight points in the first half and 10 more after the break to beat the Colts, 27-24, in an exhibition at Indianapolis in a rematch of the Super Bowl won by the Colts. In 26 plays, Grossman fumbled three times, double-clutched another snap and had a pass intercepted.

Keller becomes

Nebraska’s starter

Sam Keller will start at quarterback for Nebraska in the Sept. 1 opener against Nevada.

Keller, who transferred from Arizona State last year, beat out two-year backup Joe Ganz. Nebraska plays host to USC on Sept. 15.

Iowa receivers Dominique Douglas and Anthony Bowman were suspended after being arrested for unauthorized use of a credit card. Both are sophomores. . . . Kansas State tight end Rashaad Norwood was suspended after being arrested twice and charged with domestic battery. . . . West Virginia junior defensive tackle Ellis Lankster and redshirt freshman linebacker James Thomas were arrested and charged with transferring and receiving stolen property.. . . Hawaii athletic officials said they would look into allegations raised by former receiver Ian Sample, including the claim that school officials and players manipulated NCAA-mandated drug tests.

Federer, Henin earn

top seedings at U.S. Open

Three-time defending champion Roger Federer was seeded No. 1 for next week’s U.S. Open for the fourth consecutive year, and Justine Henin topped the women’s seedings. Rafael Nadal was seeded second and Andy Roddick was fifth. James Blake was seeded sixth. Sisters Serena and Venus Williams, were seeded eight and 12th, respectively.

Mardy Fish moved into the third round of the Pilot Pen tournament with a 6-7 (4), 7-5, 6-0 victory over Filippo Volandri at New Haven, Conn.

Defenseman Klemm signs with Kings

Free-agent defenseman Jon Klemm, a member of two Stanley Cup champion teams in Colorado, has signed a one-year contract with the Kings. Klemm, 37, had one goal and two assists in 38 games with Dallas last season.

The rain-plagued Toyo Tires NHRA Nationals was washed out for the second day in a row at Reading, Pa. . . . A 31-year-old man was shot during an altercation outside the home of Washington Wizards guard DeShawn Stevenson at Orlando, Fla., police said. Curtis Ruff was shot in the leg. . . . The Clippers waived guard Will Conroy. . . . All five games at the Little League World Series were postponed because of rain at South Williamsport, Pa.
