Frahm has that Bulldog attitude

The number of Clippers who reached the NBA via Gonzaga just doubled.

Guard Richie Frahm, signed shortly after Ruben Patterson was waived, joins fellow Gonzaga alumnus Dan Dickau on the roster.

“Now we just need [John] Stockton, [Adam] Morrison and [Ronny] Turiaf and we are set,” Frahm said.

Stockton is long retired, Morrison is injured and out for the season and Turiaf suits up down the hallway for the Lakers, whom the Clippers play tonight, the teams’ first meeting this season.

So Frahm and Dickau will have to settle for being the only Clippers who double as Bulldogs.

Frahm, 6 feet 5 and 202 pounds, was waived by the Phoenix Suns shortly before the season began. He previously averaged 3.5 points and 1.2 rebounds for four NBA franchises in 130 games.

“Nothing fancy,” Frahm said. “Just run around and shoot and bring some energy.”

Frahm and Dickau didn’t play together at Gonzaga, although they were roommates when Dickau redshirted during the 1999-2000 season.

But they do have a history. They grew up in the same city -- Vancouver, Wash. -- and played on the same fifth- and sixth-grade basketball team.

“It’s pretty exciting for two guys from Vancouver, Washington,” Frahm said.

Coach Mike Dunleavy said he is looking for Frahm to spread the court.

“He is a terrific outside shooter,” Dunleavy said. “That’s the biggest component that he brings. We felt that was an area of need for us right now. We have guys that get double-teamed in the low post and are looking for ways to open that up a little bit.”

Frahm, who said he was entertaining offers to play in Spain when he heard from the Clippers, has had trouble finding an NBA home. Dunleavy said the team will find out if Frahm suits the offense as he becomes acclimated to it.

“We’ll find out more as we go,” Dunleavy said. “Sometimes, guys take a little bit of time before they find their confidence at the next level or the right team or the right fit for them.”

Sam Cassell, who has a strained calf, was ruled out for today’s game.

“He is still healing,” said athletic trainer Jasen Powell. “At the earliest, he would be available against Dallas [Friday] or San Antonio [Saturday].”

Forward Tim Thomas, who suffered a sprained right ankle against the Memphis Grizzlies on Friday, will be a game-time decision.

The schedule is about to get considerably tougher for the Clippers, starting with tonight’s game. Six of the seven teams they play before the end of the year have winning records, including games at Dallas and San Antonio and a home-and-away series against the Phoenix Suns.
