Delta Air Lines Inc. and US Airways Group Inc. will be eligible to compete for new China routes this year and in 2009 in bidding reserved for carriers that don’t yet have the right to fly there.

The airlines may benefit from a Transportation Department order that will allow U.S. passenger carriers to apply next month for 56 flights to China. Starting Aug. 1, the daily flights will be added over the next two years under an agreement reached by the two nations May 23.

Among the six largest U.S. carriers that fly internationally, only Delta and US Airways don’t serve China.
