The devil’s work done, he leads the good life

With a premise that sounds like a slacker comedy crossed with “The Exorcist,” the new CW series “Reaper” is getting serious buzz, and Tyler Labine is a key reason why. The Canadian-born, Valley-dwelling actor plays Bert “Sock” Wysocki, best bud of Sam Oliver (Bret Harrison), who happens to work part-time for the devil. Sound intriguing? It premieres Tuesday night at 9.

Anything’s possible

I’m not really into the club scene, but my wife, Carrie, and I do like to go to Largo on their free-for-all Friday nights. I love the whole vibe there, how cool and dark it is inside and how respectful the audience is of the artists. I don’t really go there for the food, but I have gotten addicted to the chicken cacciatore, so I’d have to get a plate of that. My dream lineup of performers would be Jon Brion, David Cross and, for an encore set, Mitch Hedberg would miraculously rise from the grave. He’s my favorite comedian of all time. That’s the thing I love about Largo -- anything could happen. After that, we’d hit up Amoeba Records and go through the used section with a nice buzz on. And maybe we’d stop by Spaceland for a late set by Eskimo Hunter. That’s a pretty good Friday night.

A green start

Early Saturday, I’d go golfing with my wife and a buddy at Studio City Golf, a par-three course on Whitsett out in the Valley. It’s nice and easy, and you can play twice if you want to get 18 holes in. Then we might have one of their famous plates of fries for breakfast, along with herbal tea with honey for me, because I don’t drink coffee. I’m too wired already.

Then I’d hook up with my two brothers and go down to Hermosa Beach with our baseball gloves and play catch for a few hours as we get caught up with each other about all the good times. Maybe we’d drive out to the Wiener Factory on Ventura Boulevard. The chili cheese dogs are unreal. Or we’d just stay in Hermosa and hang around for drinks and dinner at the Poop Deck, a nautical-themed bar-restaurant right on the boardwalk. Cheap drinks, lots of netting and fake shells around and fish up on the walls. I think all the food’s deep-fried, and I’d have the razor clams. Afterward, I’d hit up Cold Stone Creamery for some apple pie à la Coldstone, and then we’d go back to my house for some hot tub time and a pingpong tournament in the garage.

Walking the dog

On Sunday morning, I’d take Libby, my awesome deaf albino pit bull, for a walk up near the reservoir by the Hollywood sign. It’s like you’re in a little pocket of British Columbia: sparkling water, trees everywhere, very nice. After that, we’d go to Hugo’s on Santa Monica for a dish called Pasta Papa, which I think is something like eggs, meat, spaghetti, Parmesan cheese, garlic and cilantro. It’s a heavy, heavy dish but really great after a night at the Poop Deck.

Maybe we’d go bowling at Lucky Strike Lanes. Yep, bowling and a couple of drinks. I’m a great bowler (wink-wink). But it’s not about the score, it’s about the camaraderie. Then we’d stop and catch a film at the Silent Movie Theatre in the Fairfax district [closed now but reopening in late October]. I saw “Nosferatu” there once and talked afterward for a long, long time with the organ player. He was regaling me with tales of all the movies he’s played for and all the stars who’ve come by. Then I’d go wait in line for the rest of the night at Pink’s and grab myself another hot dog. Mustard, ketchup, relish and onions. Pretty simple, pretty great.
