“Be Kind Rewind”

It’s not the best thing Michel Gondry has ever done, but considering his resume (“Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” “The Science of Sleep,” the best music videos ever), there’s no reason to take that as a deterrent. The loopy, lovable story follows two video store clerks (Jack Black and Mos Def) who accidentally erase all the tapes and decide to reshoot their own versions of the movies. It’s as much an ode to cardboard and Elmer’s Glue as it is to Hollywood filmmaking. Gondry is the only guy I can think of who’s capable of making studio pictures about arts and crafts. “Be Kind Rewind” is worth seeing for its big art project -- a homemade Fats Waller biopic -- alone.
