Riverside County sheriff’s officials are investigating the death of a Fresno man whose body was found Saturday morning near railroad tracks in Cabazon.

The body of Gustavo Morin, 49, was spotted shortly before 2:30 a.m. by a Union Pacific railroad employee as it lay between tracks that run parallel to Railroad Avenue and east of Main Street in Cabazon, about 17 miles northwest of Palm Springs, authorities said.

He “had trauma on his body . . . that could be caused by the impact of a moving train,” sheriff’s officials said in a statement.

A report from the Riverside County sheriff-coroner says Morin was injured at 1:50 a.m. and died about half an hour later.

The report described Morin as a “pedestrian struck by a train.”

Riverside County sheriff’s investigator Matt Diaz said officials were still trying to determine what Morin was doing on the tracks at that hour.

“We are waiting for the toxicology results from the autopsy,” Diaz said.

Travel on the eastbound and westbound tracks was temporarily delayed near the area while law enforcement officials processed the scene.

The tracks have since reopened.

The body was discovered a little more than 24 hours after David Leal Martinez, 44, of Riverside was struck and killed by a Union Pacific freight train in the San Bernardino County city of Grand Terrace.

That incident is being investigated by the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department. Authorities said an autopsy on Martinez is pending.
