From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Alain Bernard shattered the 100-meter freestyle world record Friday with a time of 47.60 seconds at the European swimming championships at Eindhoven, Netherlands.

In the first semifinal, Bernard took nearly a quarter of a second off the record of 47.84, set by Pieter Van den Hoogenband of the Netherlands at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

Van den Hoogenband, the European and Olympic champion, did not race because of illness.

Bernard turned in 22.88 -- inside Van den Hoogenband’s mark -- and stormed down the second lap to finish nearly a second in front of fellow Frenchman Fabien Gilot, who was second.

The 100 freestyle heats were overshadowed by the absence of Milorad Cavic. The American-born Serb swimmer was kicked out of the championships for wearing a T-shirt proclaiming “Kosovo is Serbia” as he was presented the gold medal for the 50 butterfly on Wednesday night.

Alessia Filippi of Italy won her second gold of the championships, adding the 800 freestyle to the 400 individual medley she won Tuesday. She overtook Camelia Potec of Romania at the 750-meter mark to win in 8:23.50.

PRO FOOTBALL

Tatupu agrees to $42-million deal

Lofa Tatupu agreed to terms on a $42-million contract with Seattle that will keep the Pro Bowl linebacker with the Seahawks through the 2015 season.

The deal includes the final two years on the original contract he signed after being selected in the second round from USC in 2005, plus six more years worth a potential $42 million.

Fletcher Smith, Tatupu’s agent, said the deal includes about $18 million in guaranteed money from 2008 to 2010.

Tatupu was supposedly too slow and too short when he was the sixth linebacker taken in the 2005 draft.

Last season Tatupu became the second player in Seahawks history to be named to the Pro Bowl in each of his first three years.

The Atlanta Falcons have agreed to terms with kicker Jason Elam, who is leaving Denver after 15 seasons with the Broncos.

The NFL Network reported that Elam settled for a four-year, $9-million contract that includes $3.3 million in guaranteed money.

Elam has reached 100 points in each of his 15 seasons and ranks fifth on the career list with 395 field goals and sixth in points with 1,786.

Suspended Tennessee Titans cornerback Adam “Pacman” Jones said earlier this month he’d love to play for the Dallas Cowboys.

Apparently the teams have begun the process of trying to make a trade happen.

The Dallas Morning News, citing an unnamed source, reported that Dallas and Tennessee have held preliminary talks about a trade.
