A city police officer shot and injured a gun-wielding man who was threatening to take his own life and appeared likely to harm a woman he was with, authorities said Monday.

The 28-year-old Long Beach man, who was shot in his upper torso, was expected to survive, said Sgt. David Marander of the Long Beach Police Department. Marander said he did not know of any injuries to the woman.

Officers responded to a domestic disturbance call shortly after 11 p.m. Sunday involving a possibly suicidal man with a gun.

Police arrived at an apartment building in the 4800 block of East Anaheim Street to find the man with a handgun standing in an upper-story balcony with a woman, Marander said.

Numerous officers unsuccessfully tried to get the man to put down his weapon, Marander said. After a standoff that lasted about half an hour, an officer shot the man, causing nonfatal injuries, he said.

Marander said he did not know the nature of the relationship between the man and the woman, and said authorities were not releasing names to protect the identity of a possible victim of domestic abuse.

People with information about the incident were asked to call homicide detectives Bryan McMahon and Patrick O’Dowd at (562) 570-7244.
