Compton finally solves Dominguez

The football rivalry between city neighbors Compton and Dominguez highs had been so lopsided that Dominguez Coach Willie Donerson once requested a running clock during the second half of a game the Dons won, 78-0, in 1996.

So when Compton junior safety Chris Jones intercepted a pass at the Tarbabes’ one-yard line with 12 seconds left Friday night to secure a 12-9 victory over host Dominguez, things got a little crazy.

Compton players shed tears of joy and Tarbabes Coach Calvin Bryant also ended up wet after his players dumped a bucket of ice water on him in celebration of the team’s ending a 24-game losing streak in the series.

“It was pandemonium,” Bryant said Saturday. “I was hoping that someone would come through. Fortunately, we were the team that came up with the big play.”

USC-bound defensive back Chris Metcalf intercepted two passes for Compton (2-0), which next plays at Granada Hills Kennedy (0-2) on Friday before opening Moore League play.
