The last defendant in a $2-million Central Valley almond theft ring has pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor that will let him avoid jail time.

Sacramento County district attorney’s spokeswoman Shelly Orio said Wednesday that 44-year-old Sukhwinder Grewal will pay a $10,000 fine. She said he received a lighter sentence in exchange for his cooperation with prosecutors involving three other defendants in the case.

The others were convicted of felonies. Two were sentenced to jail terms, while one is awaiting sentencing.
