Amazon.com Inc. will introduce a new version of its Kindle electronic-book reader and start a pilot program for its use in universities, a person familiar with the matter said.

The new Kindle, to be announced this week, will have a higher-resolution screen and improved ability to handle notation such as mathematical formulas, the source said.

Case Western Reserve University, Princeton University, Reed College, the University of Virginia and Arizona State University are involved in the pilot, which will have students use Kindles rather than textbooks, the person said.
