A City Council panel Tuesday approved a 219-unit condominium project on La Brea Avenue despite criticism from community groups who said it was too big for the surrounding neighborhood.

The council’s Planning and Land Use Management Committee voted to approve the seven-story project known as La Brea Gateway, which is planned for the northwest corner of La Brea and Willoughby avenues.

Critics warned that the residential project would dwarf one- and two-story buildings in the surrounding neighborhood. But backers of the project said the building’s western end had been reduced in height to make it more compatible with adjacent homes.

Supporters of the project also said it had won the support of the local neighborhood council.
