Re “Roots in South L.A.,” Opinion, May 24

A great article, I thought, but then I waited in vain for a paragraph explaining how important it is to choose the right tree for the location. There are many beautiful trees that do not break up sidewalks, litter the ground or invade the plumbing.

There are many trees that are also drought-resistant, give us fruit or flowers, have great sculptured shapes and provide a home for birds and other small creatures.

Don’t be discouraged. Get out there and plant.
