Greinke earns AL’s Cy Young Award

Zack Greinke won the American League Cy Young Award on Tuesday, easily beating out Felix Hernandez after a spectacular season short on wins but long on domination.

Greinke was 16-8 with a major league-best 2.16 earned-run average for Kansas City. Hernandez was 19-5 with a 2.49 ERA for Seattle.

Greinke received 25 of 28 first-place votes and three seconds for 134 points in balloting by the Baseball Writers’ Assn. of America. Hernandez had two firsts, 23 seconds and one third for 80 points.

Detroit’s Justin Verlander, who had one first-place vote, was third with 14 points. He was followed by the New York’s CC Sabathia with 13 points and Toronto’s Roy Halladay with 11 points.

Sandy Alomar Jr., the Indians’ popular former All-Star catcher, has been hired by new Cleveland Manager Manny Acta as the team’s first base coach.

Injured Querrey is back at practice

American Sam Querrey is back practicing for his return to the ATP Tour after he cut two muscles in his right forearm after sitting on a glass table that broke in Thailand. The world’s 25th-ranked player, from Thousand Oaks, said he narrowly avoided damaging the nerve in his serving arm, which would have ended his tennis career.

Andy Roddick is withdrawing from the season-ending ATP World Tour Finals in London because of a left knee injury. The No. 6-ranked Roddick injured the knee at last month’s Shanghai Masters.

Grizzlies release unhappy Iverson

The Memphis Grizzlies officially have ended their relationship with Allen Iverson by waiving the 10-time All-Star. The team announced Monday it had mutually agreed to end a one-year contract with the former NBA most valuable player.

Jamie Dixon of Pittsburgh has been chosen as USA Basketball’s national coach of the year for guiding the United States’ first FIBA under-19 world championship team since 1991.

HOCKEY

Shanahan retires after 21 seasons

Brendan Shanahan is retiring from the NHL after 21 seasons and an almost certain Hall of Fame career.

Shanahan, 40, scored 656 goals. He decided to leave the New Jersey Devils in October one day after he was told there was no spot for him on the team’s top three lines.

CYCLING

Italian will lose silver medal

Cyclist Davide Rebellin of Italy will be stripped of the silver medal in the road race from the 2008 Beijing Olympics because of doping.

The Italian Olympic Committee said it received instructions from the International Olympic Committee on Tuesday. Rebellin was one of five athletes who tested positive in April for CERA, an advanced version of the blood-boosting drug EPO, in new tests using retroactive blood samples taken at the games. All denied doping.

Tennessee player charged in theft

A fourth Tennessee football player has been charged with breaking the law in the last two weeks. Nyshier Oliver is facing a charge of shoplifting.

The 18-year-old freshman defensive back was cited at 1:45 p.m. on Nov. 7, a few hours before the Volunteers played host to Memphis. He is scheduled to make a court appearance Nov. 23. According to court records, the Jersey City, N.J., native was spotted allegedly concealing in a shopping bag a $110 brown polo shirt from Dillards.

Former Cleveland Browns wide receiver Braylon Edwards has pleaded not guilty to a misdemeanor assault charge after he was accused of punching a man outside a downtown nightclub last month. Edwards was arraigned in Cleveland Municipal Court. The 26-year-old was traded to the New York Jets two days after he was accused of punching a friend of NBA star LeBron James on Oct. 5.

Tila Nguyen, who goes by name Tila Tequila on her reality TV show, filed a lawsuit against San Diego Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman alleging domestic violence. Attorney Cyrus Nownejad told the Associated Press that Nguyen is seeking $1.5 million in damages.
