Instagram: Obama reelection doubled normal rate of pic uploads
Instagram, the popular photo-sharing social network, said the number of photos uploaded more than doubled after President Obama was projected to be the winner of the 2012 presidential election.
The Facebook-owned social network said that immediately after NBC made the projection, Instagram users began uploading photos at 2.1 times that of the normal upload rate.
In all, at least 250,000 photos were uploaded Tuesday related to the election. Instagram said more than 100,000 pics were added with the hashtag #iVoted while another 150,000 went up with the hashtag #election2012.
“The intimacy and immediacy of the Instagram experience has fostered new and meaningful connections across the globe, whether it’s looking through the lens of a family member across town, or a favorite candidate barnstorming across the nation,” the company said in a blog posted late Wednesday night.
Those are impressive figures for the growing social network, but they don’t compare to those of Twitter, which announced its election-related surge in usage earlier in the week.
Twitter’s numbers broke records for the company. More than 31 million election-related tweets were sent Tuesday, breaking the record for most tweets sent about a U.S. political history event, and at one point, the amount of tweets sent per minute jumped to 327,452, a Twitter record.
Additionally, a photo uploaded by Obama’s account saying “Four more years” with him hugging First Lady Michelle Obama became the all-time most retweeted tweet ever.
