A driver pursued by police on suspicion of stealing a vehicle has been taken into custody after a nearly four-hour standoff in Beverly Hills after he refused to get out of the car.

Lt. Max Subin, a spokesperson for the Beverly Hills Police Department, said the car was reported stolen in Beverly Hills and had been pursued by police before crashing into another vehicle. The crash occurred about 4:40 p.m.

A SWAT team negotiated with the suspect for hours for him to exit the car. Authorities closed the area around Wilshire Boulevard and Doheny Drive.

About 8:30 p.m., the driver finally emerged after police broke the car’s windows to introduce tear gas, according to Lt. Gene Kim.

“He exited the vehicle on his own accord after that point,” Kim said, “and we took him into custody.”
