Mark Taper season includes plays by Bruce Norris, Sebastian Barry

The 2013 season at the Mark Taper Forum will feature plays by Bruce Norris and Sebastian Barry, as well as revivals of classics by August Wilson and Joe Orton.

Actor Brian Dennehy will be featured in Barry’s “The Steward of Christendom.”

In all, the new season, which will begin in February, will offer five productions, down from six in the current season.

“Tribes,” by Nina Raine, will kick off the season (Feb. 27-April 14) in a production directed by David Cromer. The staging comes from New York’s Barrow Street Theatre, where the comedy currently is running. The play is about a young deaf man and his relationship with his unconventional family.

The play opened in London in 2010 and received a best-play nomination at the Olivier Awards. Cromer directed the recent acclaimed revival of Thornton Wilder’s “Our Town” for the Barrow Street Theatre, which later ran at the Broad Stage.

Wilson’s “Joe Turner’s Come and Gone” (April 24-June 9) will be staged by Phylicia Rashad. The actress directed a production of Lorraine Hansberry’s “A Raisin in the Sun” for the Ebony Repertory Theater that transferred to the Kirk Douglas Theatre in January.

Norris’ “A Parallelogram” (July 10-Aug. 18) tells the story of an eccentric woman who thinks she has the ability to look into the future. Norris won the Pulitzer Prize in 2011 for “Clybourne Park,” which ran at the Taper earlier this year.

“A Parallelogram” will be directed by Anna D. Shapiro, who staged the play at Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theatre in 2010.

Orton’s “What the Butler Saw” (Sept. 25-Nov. 3) will be directed by John Tillinger. The 1967 farce was completed shortly before Orton’s untimely death at the age of 34.

Barry’s “The Steward of Christendom” (Nov. 26 through Jan. 5, 2014) will star Dennehy as a former police officer from Dublin who has been confined to a mental home. The play premiered in 1995 in London.

Steven Robman will direct the production. Barry is the author of such critically acclaimed novels as “The Secret Scripture” and “On Canaan’s Side.”

Outside of Dennehy, no casting has been announced.
