L.A. film and TV jobs jump 8% in April over last year

Hollywood had another good month, at least when it comes to producing local jobs.

The film, television and music industries in the county generated 128,800 wage and salary jobs in April, up 8% over the same month a year ago.

Although the number of jobs dipped from March by 2%, reflecting a typical seasonal slowdown in employment, the county added 9,700 jobs from the same time a year ago, according to state employment data compiled by the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corp.

The figures -- which are subject to revision and do not count those who work as freelancers or independent contractors -- mark the third consecutive month for over-the-year job growth in the local entertainment industry. Show business also outperformed other sectors of the local economy. L.A. produced 3.9 million non-farm jobs in April, up 2% from last year.

Robert Kleinhenz, chief economist for the LAEDC, said the April figures reflect gains in local feature film and television production, which is up this year.

“All indicators in the first part of 2013 suggest that we’re seeing improvement relative to where things were during the recession,” he said.

The labor market bounced back last month as the U.S. economy added 165,000 net new jobs and the unemployment rate fell to 7.5%, its lowest level in more than five years.
