‘Lego Movie’ on top again over heavy competition in holiday weekend

“The Lego Movie” outplayed four high-profile newcomers over the Presidents Day weekend to wind up on top of the box office for the second consecutive week with a dominating $48.8 million, according to three-day estimates by Rentrak.

The 3-D animated adventure has collected nearly $130 million in two weeks.

With Valentine’s Day kicking off the weekend, the box office was especially robust, resulting in the third-best Presidents Day weekend of all time with $177 million.

Moviegoers showed much love for two new remakes. The romantic comedy “About Last Night” starring Kevin Hart and Michael Ealy scored a robust $27 million.

The film, a remake of the 1986 film starring Rob Lowe and Demi Moore, confirms the popularity of Hart, with his cop comedy “Ride Along” still going strong after five weeks with more than $8.7 million for the weekend.

“Robocop,” a reboot of the 1987 drama about a critically wounded police officer who is transformed into a crime-righting cyborg, was also impressive despite mostly negative reviews with $21.5 million. The film stars Joel Kinnaman and Samuel L. Jackson.

Less impressive was the teen romantic drama “Endless Love” which earned $13.4 million. “Winter’s Tale,” an adult romantic drama starring Colin Farrell, fizzled with $7.8 million.
