Those black wedding gowns from Vera Wang’s Fall 2012 bridal show could have been an omen: The renowned designer has split from husband Arthur Becker after 23 years of marriage.

Wang and Becker announced Wednesday that they were splitting, in a statement to WWD.

“Vera Wang and Arthur Becker have mutually and amicably agreed to separate. They remain devoted parents to their two daughters,” Wang’s company president, Mario Grauso, said in the statement.

The couple married at the Pierre Hotel in New York in 1989, when Wang was the design director at Ralph Lauren. Their daughters’ names are Cecilia and Josephine.

Wang, who opened her signature salon in the Carlyle hotel, was urged by her husband to embrace the mass side of the business, WWD said. He was involved in Wang’s various ventures, which include bridal, high- and lower-end fashion, makeup, home goods and fragrances. The company apparently operates under Wang and Becker’s two camps.

But they “will not let this impact the running of the company. They have worked too hard to build it up,” a friend told the fashion publication.

The celebrity designer created three wedding dresses for Kim Kardashian’s nuptials to Kris Humphries, plus gowns for her sister Khloe Kardashian’s wedding to Lamar Odom, as well as for Chelsea Clinton’s and Brooklyn Decker’s “I Dos.” Wang launched White by Vera Wang for budget-friendly David’s Bridal in February 2011 and the men’s tuxedo line Black by Vera Wang for Men’s Wearhouse this year.

As for those infamous black dresses? Well, they’re already out of style. Wang’s Spring 2013 bridal collection that hit the runway in April featured glowing shades of red and scarlet.
