Fugitive wanted for allegedly molesting children nabbed in Oregon
A fugitive from Riverside County wanted for allegedly sexually assaulting children has been arrested at a motel in Oregon, turned in by a citizen who happened across a flier detailing the allegations against the man, prosecutors said.
Authorities monitored the Eugene, Ore., motel where Carlos Alberto Campuzano, 35, was believed to be staying, and was arrested after he left his room to smoke, according to a statement from the Riverside County district attorney’s office. He was booked in Oregon on a $1-million warrant from Riverside County.
Campuzano, who previously lived in Moreno Valley, faces nine felony charges related to the molestation and sexual assault of children younger than 14, prosecutors said. He could faces up to 120 years to life in state prison if convicted.
Prosecutors said the charges stem from a 2009 investigation by Moreno Valley police into the claims of two sisters, who told authorities that, from 2000 to 2004, Campuzano had touched them inappropriately many times. One of the girls claimed that Campuzano raped her when she was 10 years old.
He was arrested by U.S. Marshals who were working with investigators from the fugitive apprehension unit of the district attorney’s office.
