O.C. supervisors poised to hire new CEO
After a lengthy search, Orange County supervisors may have found a replacement for former CEO Tom Mauk, who resigned amid controversy last summer.
Supervisors are set to approve an employment contract next week with Mike Giancola, who heads the county’s Waste and Recycling Department. Giancola went to work at the department in 1977 as a park attendant.
Giancola will be paid $245,000 annually, according to his employment contract, which was posted online Tuesday.
Supervisors Chairman Shawn Nelson said Giancola has proved to be a good manager who has overseen a complex department.
“He’s been with us 34 years, interrupted only by five years of service in the Navy,” he said.
Mauk resigned in July over criticism in how county employees handled complaints against Carlos Bustamante, a public works executive and former Santa Ana councilman who has been been charged with sexually assaulting multiple women over eight years.
The board came close to a deal with Santa Barbara County CEO Chandra Wallar in March, but could not agree on pay. She wrote a critical letter to supervisors after her name was leaked to Voice of OC.
